AI Agents Need Identity Before They Get Autonomy

AI Agents Need Identity Before They Get Autonomy

Enterprise AI is entering a new phase. The central problem is no longer whether an agent can complete a task. It is whether the organization can prove which agent acted, who authorized it, what systems it touched and whether its access can be revoked immediately.

That shift changes the architecture of agentic systems. A useful agent may call APIs, retrieve customer data, update a ticket, deploy infrastructure or initiate a financial workflow. Each action crosses a trust boundary. Treating the agent as a generic application account or giving it a long-lived credential creates a gap between the speed of automation and the slower controls designed for human users.

Identity becomes the first control plane

Every production agent needs a distinct, governed identity. That record should identify its owner, purpose, lifecycle state and permitted authority. It should also separate the agent itself from the models, tools and services it uses. Without that separation, security teams cannot tell whether an incident came from the agent’s policy, a compromised credential, an unsafe tool or a third-party model.

Short-lived credentials are the practical companion to agent identity. Instead of storing permanent secrets, an agent receives narrowly scoped access for the duration of a specific task. The credential can expire automatically, be rotated and be revoked when the requested action falls outside policy. This reduces the damage window if an agent is compromised or simply makes a bad decision.

Discovery matters as much as authentication

Identity controls only work when the enterprise knows which agents exist. Large organizations are already building agents across multiple cloud and model platforms, often in separate departments. That creates the AI equivalent of shadow IT: useful systems can move into production without a shared inventory, consistent evaluation or a clear accountable owner.

A mature control layer therefore combines discovery with containment. It should find agents across environments, map their dependencies and run them in isolated execution contexts. A kill switch is not an admission of failure; it is a standard operational safeguard, similar to stopping a production deployment or disabling a service account.

Evaluation has to continue after launch

Pre-deployment testing is necessary but insufficient. Agents can drift as models change, connected data evolves and business processes are updated. Organizations need continuous measures for task quality, policy compliance, cost and tool usage. An audit trail should make every consequential step reviewable without forcing teams to reconstruct events from fragmented application logs.

Cost visibility is part of governance too. When each agent’s model calls, token consumption and tool activity are attributed to a specific owner and workflow, leaders can compare operational value with ongoing spend. The same telemetry that improves security also supports better product and investment decisions.

The operating model is the real product

Agent platforms are increasingly competing on more than model performance. Their value will depend on how well they integrate identity, least-privilege access, evaluation, observability and infrastructure change controls. Enterprises do not need an agent that is merely clever; they need one that can work inside the same accountability system as every other critical service.

The winning design principle is straightforward: autonomy should expand only when verification expands with it. Give each agent an owner, a bounded role, temporary credentials, an isolated runtime and an auditable record. That turns agentic AI from an experiment into an operational capability.
